Chapter Six

Thanksgiving weekend turned life into a disaster. Rasheeda flew back in from New York to be with Kordell, her family and Berlin. Rasheeda’s family had practically become Berlin’s. She called her folks mama and daddy, just like they were sisters. They had after all adopted her when she was still very young and they loved her just like they loved Rasheeda.

A light dusting of snow covered the ground, making Berlin almost slip and fall. Kordell caught her arm causally. As she righted herself he removed it quickly as Rasheeda prattled on about her photoshoots, the after parties, the biz as she had taken to calling it.

“And I told Lisa, my agent, that if I wasn’t making twice the money when I came back, I’m taking my business somewhere else. I mean come on, I’m hot right now darling. Have you seen the new Maybelline ads? I killed it. And the runway show for Clarissa Valentina? Honey, I made the other girls absolutely sick with jealousy.”

Berlin was feeling pretty sick herself. She cast a look at Kordell that screamed is she fucking serious? Kordell concealed a chuckle badly behind a fake cough. The street was filled with cars and they had to make their way up the slippery sidewalk carefully. Mostly because of Rasheeda. She had insisted on wearing her “best” that afternoon. Her best being a black dress with a dipping neckline and slits up the sides and tall heels that looked better suited for a stripper pole. Berlin knew that her parents, conservative Christians that they were, would not approve. She’d tried to tell Rasheeda that, but the woman had something to prove.

Ever since Rasheeda started modeling, her parents had disapproved. They were convinced that it would end up one of only a few ways. She’d become a drug addict (no offense, Berlin), she’d get murdered or she’d end up in porn. No matter how much money she made or how reputable her campaigns, their minds didn’t change.

Rasheeda’s diamond and gold necklace caught the afternoon sun, flashing in Berlin’s eyes. Berlin grew annoyed. She knew that even Rasheeda’s bringing Kordell to dinner was to prove a point. It was the look mama, I have a man and he’s rich and respectable, you can’t call me a failure now, move and it pissed Berlin off. She treated Kordell like he was a prize, not a person.

They finally reached the two story brick house all trimmed in sunshine yellow. The driveway was full of cars as well and Berlin knew the whole family and some friends would be inside. The greatest moment of Berlin’s life had been being accepted into Rasheeda’s family. They treated her no different than family. Inside, sometimes she still missed her mama, but she pushed that thought aside. There was nothing she could do about that right now.

As the door was opened and the smell of food wafted out, Berlin felt immediately at home. Mama Williams was at the door, Delores, and she had a wide grin on her face.
